Protection against Moths
  • Make sure rugs are exposed to light and air
  • Vacuum at least once a month where furniture sits on top of rug
  • Check underside of rug periodically for moth larvae or holes
  • If moth are detected, check other wool rugs and clothes for damage (moth spread quickly).
  • Then take rugs in for professional mothproofing and/or repair of moth holes.
The following 4 solutions are best for cleaning spots at home. Use a white absorbent cloth:
  • Detergent Solution: 1-teaspoon dishwashing detergent to 1/2 pint of warm water.
  • Detergent/Vinegar solution: add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar to detergent solution.
  • Ammonia Solution: 1 tablespoon of household ammonia to one cup of warm water.
  • Dry Cleaning Solvent: Test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area, then work form the outer edge of the stain toward the center.
  • Alcohol/Wine: Absorb as much as possible with a rag. Use Detergent/Vinegar solution. Work from the outer edge of the stain using a little at a time and blotting with dry cloth.
  • Coffee/Tea: Absorb as much as possible with a rag. Use Detergent solution and follow with vinegar. Work from the outer edge of the stain using a little at a time and blotting with dry cloth.
  • Grease: Scrape up with a blunt knife. Use dry-cleaning solvent followed by detergent/vinegar solution. Blot dry.
  • Liquid Foods: Blot up the surplus spillage. Use Detergent solution and follow with vinegar. Work from the outer edge of the stain using a little at a time and blotting with dry cloth.
  • Urine: After absorbing as much as possible with a rag, blot with Club Soda to help neutralize the acidic nature of urine. Then take your rug to be professionally cleaned.
